Munnar is a town and hill station located in the district of Idukki in Kerala. Kerala is the south western state of India commonly referred to as God’s Own Country.
Munnar is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Kerala and we can say at first sight that it truly is a God’s Own Country. Munnar is also one of the most popular and most visited place by foreigners. One can only reach Munnar by road transport since the area is very hilly no railway tracks are laid. Also there is no airport present in Munnar so you will have to come by road. There are many bus services from all over Kerala to Munnar. KSRTC (Kerala State Road Transport Corporation) buses and many other private buses are also available.
Places for accommodation are not hard to find in Munnar. Since Munnar is very popular with tourists there are many hotels to stay. You can find a room for as low as Rs. 800. A good room with all facilities are available at Rs. 2000 – 3000 . If you want to stay in very premium resorts they are also available but will be more expensive.
One advice for tourists is to book a room before they arrive in Munnar because due to the high demand many hotels are full. So if you are planning to come to Munnar by KSRTC bus then many buses are available from Kothamangalam KSRTC bus stand. Kothamangalam to Munnar is around 73-80 kilometers. But since the area is high range the journey might take 3 hours or more in a ordinary bus.
Once you visit Munnar you really don’t have to worry about getting lost or not being able to see all the places on time. There are a lot of taxi drivers in Munnar who will take you on a sight seeing tour. All you have to do is ask your Hotel to arrange a sightseeing tour. You can see a lot of Jeeps in Munnar because in some places the roads are not good and jeeps are best in high range. There are many Jeep drivers which are very easy to find once you arrive in Munnar who can take you on a sightseeing tour. They will take you to all famous places in Munnar.

Carmelagiri Elephant Park
Carmelagiri Elephant Park is a private park in the region which provide elephant rides. The visitors can take part in Elephant rides. Visitors can also take part in feeding an Elephant and Elephant bathe.
Elephant ride costs Rs.500 per person. The rides last around 15 min. Also for Rs. 250 you can have a photographer accompany you who will take photos of the ride and will copy that to a CD.

Mattupetty dam is built on the mountains of Kerala in Munnar. It supplies water for hydro power generation. Tourists can visit Mattupetty dam.The reservoir is one of the visiting grounds of elephants in the region.
The top station falls on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border. You can view a part of Tamil Nadu from it. The place is very windy. You can enjoy the
panoramic view of Western Ghats and the valley of Theni district of Tamil Nadu.
Eravikulam National Park
Eravikulam national park is situated along the western ghats in the Idukki district of Kerala in India.It is also the first national park in Kerala. The park has the largest surviving population of Nilgiri tahr .The other ungulates are lion-tailed macaques, gaur, Indian muntjac and sambar deer. Golden jackal, jungle cat, wild dog, dhole, leopard and tiger are the main predators. Some little-known animals such as Nilgiri langur, stripe-necked mongoose, Indian porcupine, Nilgiri marten, small clawed otter, ruddy mongoose, and dusky palm squirrel are also found.
Carmelgiri Botanical Garden
Carmelgiri Botanical Garden is situated at Korandikkadu in the Munnar – Mattupetty route. This botanical garden contains many rare species of plants and animals. The garden also has rare plants, extinct plants, medicinal plants. There is also a store that sells Chocolate, sweets, etc.
There are many more interesting places to visit in Munnar.
If you are really short on time then you might be able to see Munnar in around two days. But if you want to visit all places in Munnar and take part in many activities available then you will need at least three days. Also it gets cold in the high range even during summers. So you may need to bring a sweater. The whole place has a cold wind blowing which will make travelling on foot very comfortable and pleasant. Even under hot sun you will not sweat. I went to Munnar this summer and I found the weather very pleasant.
For vegetarians visiting the place, pure vegetarian hotels are also available. For others a variety of non-veg dishes from all over the country are also available in the local hotels.
For people who love photography, this place will be a paradise. Scenery is so beautiful. I traveled in a jeep in Munnar and found it very comfortable and pleasant.
If you want to explore on foot peacefully then do it in the early morning because the roads are less crowded in the morning and after evening it gets really crowded. A variety of street food is available from the local vendors.
